The Outer Limits Season 2 - 1964-65

33-1 ) "Soldier" - September 19, 1964

A thousand years in the future, two foot soldiers clash on a battlefield. A random energy weapon strikes both soldiers and they are hurled into a time vortex. While one soldier is trapped in the matrix of time, the other, Qarlo Clobregnny (Michael Ansara), materializes on a city street in the year 1964. Qarlo is soon captured and interrogated by Paul Kagan (Lloyd Nolan), a philologist, and his origin is discovered. As progress is made in "taming" Qarlo, the time eddy holding the enemy soldier slowly weakens. Eventually Qarlo comes to live with the Kagan family. But the enemy soldier is free, finally materializes in 1964, and tracks Qarlo to the Kagan home. In a final hand-to-hand battle Qarlo sacrifices his life to kill the enemy and save the Kagan family.

Runtime: 3:34

Runtime: 3:21

Opening Control Voice: Night comes too soon on the battlefield. For some men it comes permanently, their eyes never open to the light of day. But for this man, fighting this war, there is never total darkness. The spidery beams of light in the sky are the descendants of the modern laser beam -- heat rays that sear through tungsten, steel and flesh as though they were cheesecloth. And this soldier must go against those weapons. His name is Qarlo, and he is a foot soldier, the ultimate infantryman. Trained from birth by the state, he has never known love, or closeness, or warmth. He is geared for only one purpose: to kill the enemy. And the enemy waits for him.

Control Voice: [Act One narration] Time is fluid. The waters of forever close — and passage may not be completed. The present and the future are for a moment united. And the Enemy, half-today, half-tomorrow, is locked between...

Closing Control Voice: From the darkest of all pits, from the soul of man, come the darkest questions. Did the soldier finally come to care for those he protected? Or was it just his instinct? Questions from the dark pit, but no answers, for answers lie in the future. Is it a future in which men are machines born to kill? Or is there time for us? Time. All the time in the world. But is that enough?

34-2 ) "Cold Hands, Warm Heart" - September 26, 1964

After completing the first crewed mission to orbit Venus, astronaut Jefferson Barton (William Shatner) returns to Earth with recurring nightmares and an increasing inability to stay warm. Barton's conditions continue to worsen, result in a peculiar webbing of his fingers, and only after his nightmares become more vivid is he reminded of an unrevealed alien encounter in the Venusian atmosphere. Barton's doctors suspect the astronaut had been genetically affected by his mission, and they then struggle to treat and cure him before his mutations completely take over.

Runtime: 2:04

Opening Control Voice: The most brilliant planet in our solar system is Venus, named for the Greek Love-Goddess. It is closer to Earth than any other planet — twenty-eight million miles away. Until sometime in the last half of the twentieth century it is still a planet shrouded in mystery, enveloped in a heavy blanket of clouds and steam. Because its surface temperature was believed to be several times that of Earth's, it was not thought possible for Man to reach Venus and come back... until one day, somebody did it.

Jeff Barton: [to his wife] I love you more than anything in this world... You're the only "world" I can discover over and over again, every time I come home to you, every time I'm close to you. You're the best of all possible worlds.

Closing Control Voice: The eternal, never-ceasing search for knowledge often leads to dark and dangerous places. Sometimes it demands risks not only of those who are searching, but of others who love them. These, in their own special way, know that knowledge is never wasted, nor is love.

35-3 ) "Behold, Eck!" - October 3, 1964

The titular Eck is a creature from a two-dimensional world, trapped in our world when he fell into a time-space warp. Frightened and alone, he soon realizes that a small number of humans are able to see him with the help of special glasses that just happen to be made from meteoritic quartz. Eck proceeds to find where these glasses are made and discovers Dr. Stone (Peter Lind Hayes), an optics engineer. Unfortunately in his search for the source of the glasses, Eck scared a lot of people, even frightening one eyewitness into a heart attack. This means the police are after him now as well. Eck explains that he requires special lenses to see the time warp from where he came. He says the only way the doorway will close is for him to leave our dimension. Should the time warp remain open and an object from this world, even a bird or insect, fly in through it and reach his dimension, it will tear the time-space fabric destroying both worlds. Dr. Stone and his secretary Elizabeth race against time to help return Eck to his world. By sunrise Eck may be dead and the time warp left open.

Runtime: 4:56

Opening Control Voice: Since the first living thing gazed upward through the darkness, man has seldom been content merely to be born, to endure, and to die. With a curious fervor he has struggled to unlock the mysteries of creation and of the world in which he lives. Sometimes he has won. Sometimes he has lost. And sometimes, in the tumbling torrents of space and time, he has brief glimpses of a world he never even dreams.

Closing Control Voice: Paradoxically, man's endless search for knowledge has often plundered his courage and warped his vision, so that he has faced the unknown with terror rather than awe, and probed the darkness with a scream rather than a light. Yet there have always been men who have touched the texture of tomorrow with understanding and courage. Through these men, we may yet touch the stars.

36-4 ) "Expanding Human" - October 10, 1964

Professor Peter Wayne is disturbed to hear that his university colleague, Dr. Roy Clinton, is pursuing forbidden drug experiments with a group of graduate students. When one of the students turns up dead, Professor Wayne investigates Clinton's activities, and discovers that consciousness-expansion can have powerful and dangerous consequences.

Runtime: 3:16

Opening Control Voice: As far back as men have recorded their history, veils have been lowered to disclose a vast new reality — rents in the fabric of Man's awareness. And somewhere, in the endless search of the curious mind, lies the next vision, the next key to his infinite capacity...

Peter: What difference does it make, whether it's 20 minutes or 20 years, since neither amounts to the faintest echo of the tiniest whisper in the thunder of time?

Peter: But don't you see, you'll be doing exactly what you say your fighting: killing. Using force because your certain your right.

Roy: But it wouldn't be the same thing because we'd be advocating nothing, forcing nothing. Now there are many stong men in the world today fighting for tolerance, compassion, wisdom, for your right to be different, to be wrong even. They wouldn't be touched. Only the dogmatists, the infallible.

Peter: But that's trying to play God. You just can't do that.

Roy: Why not if God's too busy? Who to say its not his will, that we're not his agents?

Closing Control Voice: Some success, some failure, but either way the gnawing hunger to know is never sated, and the road to the unknown continues to be dark and strange.

37-5 ) "Demon with a Glass Hand" - October 17, 1964

Trent (Robert Culp) is a man with no memories of his life beyond ten days ago. His left hand, made of glass, seems to be a speaking artificially intelligent computer. Three fingers are missing and they must be found so that Trent can discover what his purpose is. In the meantime, he is being hunted by human-looking aliens. One of them tells Trent that he and the aliens are from 1000 years in the future when Earth has been conquered, a plague has destroyed all life, and all humans have mysteriously vanished. Trent successfully recovers the three missing fingers, and discovers that he is not actually a man, but a robot. Within his abdomen, stored on a gold wire, are the human survivors of the alien invasion of the future, whom he must safeguard until the events of the future have become the events of the past and the plague has dissipated.

Runtime: 4:14

Opening Control Voice: Through all the legends of ancient peoples — Assyrian, Babylonian, Sumerican, Semetic — runs the saga of the Eternal Man, the one who never dies, called by various names in various times, but historically known as Gilgamesh, the man who has never tasted death ... the hero who strides through the centuries...

Battle: I'm prepared to die.

Trent: How prepared? Why not give yourself a couple of minutes?

Battle: We all knew we would die when we came on this mission. It was worth it.

Trent: You can stay alive in this time.

Battle: I don't care about that. Helping my race is more important.

Trent: Bargain week on patriots.

Battle: Call it what you like. I'm not afraid to die.

Trent: Really? Then why are you whispering? You Kyben were always super patriots, especially when you bombed Earth from ten miles out. How does your patriotism sit with burning women and children alive?

Battle: That's war.

Trent: So's this.

Closing Control Voice: Like the Eternal Man of Babylonian legend, like Gilgamesh, one thousand plus two hundred years stretches before Trent. Without love. Without friendship. Alone: neither man nor machine, waiting. Waiting for the day he will be called to free the humans who gave him mobility. Movement, but not life.

38-6 ) "Cry of Silence" - October 24, 1964

A city couple driving in the countryside makes a turn into a mysterious valley road where their car hits a rock and stops working. After the couple leaves their car, the wife has a slight accident in which she rolls downhill and sprains her ankle. When the husband reaches her, they realize they are being stalked...by tumbleweeds who appear to be possessed by some form of energy. At first they attempt to keep the tumbleweeds at bay with fire, but soon run out of firewood. At this point they are saved by a slightly disturbed farmer named Lamont, who explains that things have been awkward in the valley ever since a UFO landed two weeks before, causing his farm to die out. Lamont tells them he stayed merely out of curiosity, but now the weeds won't allow him to leave either. The three make their way to Lamont's house where they spend a frightening night surrounded by tumbleweeds first and then thousands of frogs. Come morning, they walk back to the car without trouble, only to be attacked by living rocks once they get there. One rock kills Lamont. The couple runs back to the house, where the husband finally decides that the only way they are ever to leave there is to attempt to communicate with whatever is behind all this.

Runtime: 0:35

Opening Control Voice: In the not-distant future, the sound of man will invade those unknown depths of space which as yet we cannot even imagine. In his own world, there are no places left beyond the reach of his voice. His neighbor is no longer just next door, but anywhere at the end of a wire. And it all began when prehistoric man discovered the art of communication.

Closing Control Voice: 'And the light shineth in the darkness and the darkness comprehended it not.' The sound of man probes the dimensionless range of space seeking an answer. But if it comes, will he hear? Will he listen? Will he comprehend?

39-7 ) "The Invisible Enemy" - October 31, 1964

A pair of astronauts land on Mars; when one goes out to explore he is heard screaming and the other's last transmission indicates that he has gone out to investigate. A second Mars Mission crew later lands, tasked to both explore and find out what happened to the first crew. However one at a time, the astronauts disappear from sight, perhaps victims of some unknown, unseen Martian threat.

Runtime: 4:59

Opening Control Voice: In the vast immensities of cosmic space, bold adventurers streak their way to join battle with strange enemies on strange worlds. The alien, the unknown, perhaps even the invisible, armed only with Man's earthbound knowledge...

Closing Control Voice: Battle joined. Casualties? Yes. Resolution? Victory, of a sort. A painful step from the crib of destiny. On another day, a friend, perhaps, instead of a deadly peril. Part of the saga of the Space Pioneers.

40-8 ) "Wolf 359" - November 7, 1964

Working on behalf of corporate interests, scientist Jonathan Meridith has created a miniature version of a remote planet in his laboratory. When a mysterious life-form evolves along with the developing experiment, however, Meridith must weigh the value of his experiment versus the possible dangers.

Opening Control Voice: Outward stretches the quest for truth. Stars without end. Timeless infinities. A billion billion galaxies. Man's imagination reaches out and out while betimes the farthest reaches of knowledge are found in the smallest places...

Jonathan Meridith: Final report, Dundee Planet, star system Wolf 359. The experiment is finished. My planet is destroyed. My recommendation to the Dundee Foundation change the planet selected. Its not a place we can land our spacemen, but the project is feasible. A planet can be recreated in a laboratory. The odds are... the odds are, Mr Dundee, the next time... the next time, it'll be a place of some love and warmth like our planet Earth.

Closing Control Voice: There is a theory that Earth and sun and galaxy and all the known universes are only a dust mite on some policeman's uniform in some gigantic super-world. Couldn't we be under some super-microscope... right now?

41-9 ) "I, Robot" - November 14, 1964

Adam Link is accused of murder. However, Adam Link is a robot, who maintains the victim's death was the result of an accident. Placed on trial for the murder of Professor Link, his creator, Adam Link is defended by the professor's niece and the retired lawyer Mr. Cutler. Ultimately it turns out that the prosecution is not simply placing the robot on trial, but humankind itself as irresponsible and abusive of technology.

Runtime: 2:29

Opening Control Voice: God looked upon his world and called it good. But man was not content. He looked for ways to make it better and built machines to do the work. But in vain we build the world, unless the builder also grows.

Closing Control Voice: Out of every disaster a little progress is made. Man will build more robots and learn how to make them better. And, given enough time, he may learn how to do the same for himself.

42-10 ) "The Inheritors: Part 1" - November 21, 1964

Four U.S. Army soldiers, with nothing in common other than having served in Korea and been shot in their heads, cheat death, each attain an I.Q. of over 200, and begin working together on a mysterious project. Intelligence officer Adam Ballard discovers that the men are building a starship, and recruiting handicapped children to live on the ship. Ballard is afraid these helpless children are to be victims of alien abduction.

Runtime: 3:12

Opening Control Voice: In the troubled places of the world, the devil's hunter finds rare game. For man-made savagery is only the instrument for a secret terror stirring from its dark place of ambush...

Closing Control Voice: Man looks up at the stars and dreams his futile dreams. Child of the universe, his toys are ignorance. His games: fantasy. Not even the master of his own fate, it is the devil's puppeteer who stretches his fingers to answer the question: What will happen next?

43-11 ) "The Inheritors: Part 2" - November 28, 1964

Ballard locates the starship, which is protected by a force field, and confronts the men, begging them to turn off the field and release the captive children. They inform him that the children are not captives, and that the superior alien intelligence behind their project has healed the children of their handicaps, and needs the children to inherit and continue their culture, when their dying species has become extinct. If the children remain on Earth, their handicaps will return. Outcasts on Earth, the children and the enhanced Earthmen have voluntarily agreed to leave Earth for a new world, and preserve the legacy of the aliens.

Runtime: 3:43

Runtime: 3:02

Opening Control Voice: The earth, tumbling grain of sand in the darkness of unending space, plays host to a strange and awful guest: unsought, uninvited, possessor of fearsome power, purveyor of dark deed, a relentless traveler on the road to its mysterious goal...

Closing Control Voice: The Inheritors are on their way. In a universe of billions of stars, there are places of love and happiness. On this earth, in this spot, magic settled for a moment, wonder touched a few lives and a few odd pieces fell smoothly into the jigsaw of creation.

44-12 ) "Keeper of the Purple Twilight" - December 5, 1964

As a prelude for the invasion of Earth by aliens, the extraterrestrial being Ikar studies the human race. The one thing he cannot comprehend is emotion. Obsessed scientist Dr. Plummer is near a nervous breakdown trying to complete a magnetic disintegrator that will convert matter into pure energy. Unbeknownst to him, his weapon would be of help to Ikar's invasion force should it be completed, so Ikar makes a deal with Plummer. He will help Plummer complete the invention so long as Plummer allows him to steal his emotions for a "test drive". But due to the interference of Plummer's girlfriend, Ikar is unable to control or understand his emotions, causing the experiment to backfire. Ikar's behavior comes to the attention of his superiors and they dispatch soldier forms of his species, of which he is an advanced intellectual worker form, to discipline him.

Opening Control Voice: There is no limit to the extension of the curious mind. It reaches to the end of the imagination, then beyond into the mysteries of dreams, hoping always to convert even the dreams into reality for the greater well-being of all mankind.

Closing Control Voice: The curious mind cannot be chained. It is a free mind endlessly searching for the greater freedom that must eventually make every living being joyfully complete within himself, therefore at peace with himself and his neighbors.

45-13 ) "The Duplicate Man" - December 19, 1964

In the 21st century, wealthy researcher Henderson James keeps an illegal alien of a different kind in his laboratory. The alien, a beast known as a megasoid, is the last of its kind on Earth. It was imported under the table by a corrupt space captain bribed by James and it is incredibly dangerous. The megasoid escapes the lab and Henderson James decides the only way to destroy it before it reproduces is to send out a clone of himself to assassinate the alien. Clones are extremely restricted by law in the 21st century but again James finds that money talks. He spends $100,000 to buy one and programs it to hunt down the megasoid. But things become complicated once the duplicate, with a hint from the megasoid, realises what he is.

Opening Control Voice: Since the first day that Man stared up at the stars and saw other worlds, there has been no more haunting question than this: What will we find there? Will there be other creatures and will they be like us? Or when that ancient dream comes true, will it turn into a nightmare? Will we find on some distant frozen planet an alien life of unimaginable horror?

Closing Control Voice: In all the universe, can there be creatures more strange than the species called Man? He creates and destroys. He fumbles and makes mistakes. But the thing which distinguishes him is his ability to learn from his mistakes.

46-14 ) "Counterweight" - December 26, 1964

Four scientists, a newspaper man, and a construction tycoon agree to spend 261 days in isolation in an interstellar flight simulation. But the experiment is secretly infiltrated by an alien being.

Opening Control Voice: The great unknown: limitless heavens crowded with sparking mysteries, challenging man's curiosity. But the heavens are not oceans. Man cannot push a boat into its currents and set sail for the next horizon. The heavens are a mystery only science can solve as it penetrates the unknown.

Harvey Branson: The greatest danger? I don't know, there's so many. Maybe the worst are the ones we make for ourselves by seeing things that don't exist except in our own imagination.

Closing Control Voice: Panic button pressed. Passengers returned. One side always in the sunlight, the other always in darkness; the known and the unknown. Frightening to each other only when they are both unknown... and misunderstood.

47-15 ) "The Brain of Colonel Barham" - January 2, 1965

The space race continues as the American military strives to be the first to successfully land a man on Mars. But the best candidate for the job, Col. Barham, is dying of an incurable ailment. It is decided to separate his brain from his body and keep it alive, with neural implants connecting it to visual and audio input/output for the mission. But without a body, the brain becomes extremely powerful and megalomaniacal.

Opening Control Voice: With the world growing more crowded, the great powers strive to conquer other planets. The race is on. The interplanetary sea has been charted; the first caravelle of space is being constructed. Who will get there first? Who will be the new Columbus?

Closing Control Voice: Progress goes on. One experiment fails, but even out of failure, valuable lessons are learned. A way will be found, someday, somehow. It always is.

48-16 ) "The Premonition" - January 9, 1965

An X-15 rocket-powered research aircraft pilot and his wife become trapped 10 seconds ahead of their time and watch time unfold to catch up with them at about 1 second every 30 minutes. In the time left before returning to synch with normal time, they see that their daughter is about to be hit by a truck. But to stop the accident could mean to stay forever stuck in time. They must be back in the positions they were in five hours ago before time "catches up" with them. After dealing with a phantom (exposed as a negative image) who experienced the same situation some time back and did not make it out in time, Jim finally hits upon a way to save his daughter from death. He attaches a car's seatbelts from the back wheel to the handbrake of the military truck. With no time to spare, he and his wife hurry back to their original placements. When time catches up, the truck groans, rolls forward, and the rear-wheel/seatbelt solution pulls the emergency brake, stopping the truck. Their daughter is safe, the world returns to normal, and no one except Jim and his wife are the wiser.

Opening Control Voice: On the fabulous spawning grounds of man's ever increasing knowledge of science and technology, ancient half-forgotten legends seemingly have no place. Except one: the legend of the Gordian knot. A knot so intricate and convoluted that no man could untie it, for there are problems so perplexing that they're seemingly impossible to solve when man ventures to the outer limits of his experience.

Closing Control Voice: Man is forever solving the most perplexing problems as he ventures ever further into the unknown. But where are the outer limits of his ingenuity? Will he ever encounter a problem, a gordian knot which he cannot ultimately cut?

49-17 ) "The Probe" - January 16, 1965

The final episode of the Outer Limits deals with four plane crash survivors who suddenly find themselves trapped in an alien space probe that was taking water samples. Inside they find a puzzle they need to solve before all four are killed.

Runtime: 4:46

Opening Control Voice: The persistence of Man's curiosity led him into new worlds. Without conquering his own, he invaded the sub-world of the microscope and the outer-world of space. It is said turnabout is fair play... but is it?

Closing Control Voice: A few days, a week, a month, will the earth be visited by a stranger from the universe? A warm, compassionate stranger to tell us of wonders beyond imagination, of life beyond comprehension, of secrets from the treasure house of stars.

What If "The Phantom Planet" Was an Outer Limits Episode?
(with commercials from 1964)

Granted, the monster in this 1961 public domain film is not anywhere close to Outer Limits standards. But the movie isn't bad for a low-budget sci fi flick from the period. And the Outer Limits music and voice-over narration make it very watchable.

Runtime: 59:45
